This limited-edition print was commissioned by the Prints and Drawings Council of LACMA. In recent years L.A. artist Aaron Morse has received widespread acclaim for his colorful and thoughtfully rendered works in acrylic and watercolor that blend an appreciation for romantic 19th century frontier epics with an awareness of their mythic dimensions. While printed matter, such as illustrated historical tales, serves as a primary source of imagery for Morse, this is the artist’s first published print. In describing Deerslayer, Morse explains: “I have attempted to make it read sequentially as a distorted group of narrative pictures, and also pictorially as an all-over composition. I think of it as being related to a movie trailer or a storyboard, one where the structure reveals a trajectory of action, climax and rest—and then more action.” Established in 1965, The Prints and Drawings Council (PDC) supports the Prints and Drawings Department at LACMA. In addition to raising funds for acquisitions for the museum’s permanent collection, the PDC encourages collecting, scholarship, and appreciation in the field of original works of art on paper.
