The gear meshing process was challenging but I believe the tolerances in this version are a great balance. Everything is designed to be press-fit though tight � I had to use work gloves to push some of the dowels in. For added safety you may want to glue the components after assembly. Aligning the gear teeth during assembly can be finicky. The easiest method I�ve found is to align the 'eye' of the cross-spherical gear with the 'eye' of a monopole gear then mesh the gears together until all alignments match. The ABENICS magic will take care of the rest! Gear Housing The housing is printed in two halves and secured with dowel pins which are the same pins holding the halves of the cross-spherical gear together. Each half features a print-in-place bearing to mount the monopole axles. To avoid excessive play the bearing tolerance is tight so make sure to break the seal and spin it a few times after printing. Improved Meshing By revisiting my OnShape FeatureScript code I doubled the resolution of the monopole gear hobbing process and added relief to achieve a true mesh between gear surfaces. The result is an extremely smooth interaction between gears when printed even in reduced sizes. Reduced Size I�ve scaled down all models including reducing the pitch diameter of the cross-spherical gear to 35mm. The new size is compact enough to fit comfortably in your hand making it an addictive fidget toy. V1 - Original Model V1 is much larger than V2 and does not mesh properly.
