The Abhayamudra Ring is a band in 925 sterling silver carrying a figure with one hand raised, palm outward, in the abhayamudra, the Sanskrit gesture of fearlessness used in Indian and Buddhist sculpture to say that the one who makes it intends no harm. The face is kept calm and still, with worked pattern running along the band. Everything rests on that raised hand: read the gesture and the piece is legible at once, miss it and only an unnamed figure remains. Abhayamudra names the absence of fear on both sides of a meeting, carried here as a cultural and artistic motif rather than as a devotional object.
