Acer davidii seeds grow into Père David's maple — a snakebark maple native to the temperate biome of central and western China, named after Armand David (1826–1900), the French mis sionary-naturalist who collected extensively in China and after whom the giant panda was also named. This elegant deciduous tree develops the characteristically beautiful green bark with white vertical striations of the snakebark maples, combined with broadly ovate to slightly three-lobed leaves that turn orange-yellow in autumn, and attractive pendulous clusters of winged samaras that hang decoratively on the branches.
