Native to Japan, Korea, and China, Japanese maples have been refined by horticulturalists for centuries. 'Garnet' is a dissectum type - the finely cut foliage type - and is notably more vigorous than many in this group. Slow-growing overall, but a rewarding long-term garden plant that looks better with every passing year. Grow in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds and late frosts, which can scorch the emerging leaves in spring. Partial shade or dappled light is ideal, though full sun is tolerated if soil stays reliably moist. Use ericaceous or humus-rich, well-drained compost.
