Supplies Art paper Spare piece of A4 or A3 paper A4 card with body parts printed Body Template [download] Crayons / oil pastels Paint / Food dye Paintbrush Scissors Craft Glue Back backing paper Images of athletes in motion athletes 1 [download] athletes 2 [download] (An envelope to hold all the cut outs is optional) Lesson 1 This lesson can be done on a painted background or just left on art paper with the white. For a painted background, decide on a colour and use food dye or paint to cover the art paper. If using food dye water it down and apply generously so that patterns form as it dries. 2 Look at athletes and sports people in action. Observe the way their body parts move. Have children make these movements with their bodies. 3 Cut out all the body parts on the card that has been printed. There will be lots of small parts so if children are young, you may need to give them an envelope to store all their pieces. Children will need to choose an action and they try to replicate this using the body parts they have cut out. Once they are happy with the way it looks they can paste these pieces onto the spare piece of paper. 4 Place this piece as a template underneath the painted or white art paper. Use one hand to hold the papers still and the other hand to rub over the figure with black crayon or oil pastel. The crayon or oil pastel must be placed on the paper in a flat position and then pressed over the figure to hopefully reveal the outline of a moving person. 5 You can leave just one figure on the artwork or you can plan to have two. Just repeat the rubbing if more than one is required. 6 Once complete, glue onto a black background and display in the classroom with labels about the sporting event.
