Yucca filamentosaYucca filamentosa, also known as Adam’s needle, Spanish bayonet, yucca, and needle palm, is a delightful, almost stemless broadleaf evergreen shrub that calls the sandy beaches, dunes, and fields of South Carolina, Florida, and Mississippi its home. It has also spread beyond its original range, expanding into New England. This beautiful plant showcases a lovely basal rosette of sturdy, sword-shaped, spine-tipped green leaves adorned with long, curly threads along the edges. These leaves come together to form a charming foliage clump about 2-3 feet tall. During late spring, a striking flowering stalk emerges from the center of each rosette, reaching heights of 5-8 feet and occasionally up to 12 feet, showcasing long clusters of nodding, bell-shaped, creamy white flowers. Its fruits are elliptical capsules that gracefully open to release seeds. Over time, it will form a small, friendly colony thanks to its basal offsets. This wonderful plant thrives in light, dry to medium, well-drained soils under the warm sun. It's quite resilient, handling poor sandy soils, heat, drought, and even salty air! Surprisingly, it also tolerates some partial shade, making it a versatile choice for various gardens. Plus, propagating it from basal offsets is a breeze.
