📍Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia Late afternoon on the Zambezi River, and the clay banks are holding the last of the sun in a way that makes them look architectural. Carved. The holes cut into the face below are not accidental. Each one is the entrance to a tunnel, two feet deep, ending in a small chamber where eggs have been laid in the dark. The white-fronted bee-eater stands at the top of its own building. The insects floating in the warm air around it are both the reason it chose this bank and the meal it is considering. Its colors, burnt orange and red, and a flash of teal at the wing, are almost exactly the colors of the wall beneath its feet. It arrived here knowing exactly where it was going. That is rarer than it sounds.
