This native of the Guyanas and Suriname is one of those kinds of plants that will have you scratching your head in wonder. The center of the upright rosette of very stiff mottled g reen leaves forms an overlapping, hollow structure that in nature is believed by some to be an ant nest! If this is true, indeed, it is one of the most highly adapted ant-plants in the bromeliad world. At anthesis, the bloom spike pierces the side of the structure and it flowers normally (see photo)…must see to believe. Rare in cultivation, truly bizarre. Easy to grow but cold tender. Show more
