Description Aeonium undulatum - Saucer Plant Care Guide FAQ/Common Issues Aeonium undulatum, also called Saucer Plant, is a rosette succulent in the Crassulaceae family native to the Canary Islands off the northwest coast of Africa. The plant grows on rocky hillsides and coastal cliffs where mild temperatures and seasonal dry periods shape its growth cycle. It grows both indoors and outdoors. Large, flat rosettes of glossy, paddle-shaped leaves form the plant's signature structure, with gently undulating edges that give it its species name. The foliage is uniform green with a smooth, waxy texture and can reach 8 to 12 inches across at maturity. It sits atop sturdy upright stems that create a sculptural, tiered appearance, with the rosette form staying compact and orderly as the plant grows taller over time. When nighttime temperatures drop, Aeonium undulatum produces tall, conical flower clusters that rise from the center of mature rosettes during cool seasonal shifts. The plant blooms in response to the temperature changes it naturally experiences in its native habitat. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, so it is safe for households with pets. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot with good light. The plant wilts gently when it needs water. Keep it sheltered from heavy rain to prevent root rot, and rotate it occasionally so all sides of the rosette receive even light. Stem cuttings root readily in dry succulent soil within a few weeks. Aeonium undulatum grows well in bright indirect light to partial sun, with full sun tolerated in cooler climates but caution needed in intense south-facing windows. Water it thoroughly every 10 to 14 days during spring and autumn, reducing to once a month or less in summer when growth slows. Aeonium undulatum does best in well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with roughly 30 percent perlite to prevent soggy roots. It prefers temperatures between 65 and 75°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F. Aeonium undulatum is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced diluted fertilizer applied once in early spring and once in autumn. It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips no lower than around 25°F before frost damage becomes a concern. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, as well as along the mild coastal stretches of Oregon and Washington. In cooler states like North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, New Mexico, and coastal areas of Virginia, it can be grown outside in containers and brought in before the first hard frost. Q: How often should I water Aeonium undulatum? A: Every 10 to 14 days during spring and autumn when actively growing. In summer, cut back to once a month or less as it goes semi-dormant. Q: Is this succulent pet friendly? A: Aeonium undulatum is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the sap may cause mild skin or paw irritation on contact. Q: Which window direction works best for Aeonium undulatum? A: Bright indirect light from any window works well. In cooler climates, full sun is fine, but in hot regions avoid intense afternoon heat from south-facing windows in summer, which can scorch the leaves. Q: Can it be grown outdoors year-round? A: Aeonium undulatum grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 9–11, such as California, Texas, and Florida. In colder zones, grow it in containers and bring it indoors before the first frost. Q: How do I propagate Saucer Plant? A: The easiest method is stem cuttings. Allow a rosette cutting to callous for a day or two, then place it in dry succulent soil where it will begin rooting within a few weeks. Q: How large does it get? A: Saucer Plant rosettes reach 8 to 12 inches across at maturity, with upright stems that give the plant an impressive statuesque presence over time.
