Agate replaced shells are fossils where the original shell material has been replaced by agate, a variety of chalcedony, through a process called permineralization. This occurs when mineral-rich groundwater seeps into the shell and replaces the organic matter with silica, often forming beautiful, detailed fossil specimens.
