Leatherjackets are the root-feeding larvae of crane flies (often known as daddy long legs) and can cause serious damage to lawns. Feeding below the surface from autumn through to the following summer, they weaken grass by destroying the root system, leading to yellowing patches and poor growth. Lawns affected by leatherjackets can often be lifted easily, and further damage is common as birds and wildlife dig into the turf to feed on the larvae. These beneficial nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) actively seek out leatherjacket larvae in the soil, entering their bodies and releasing bacteria that stop them from feeding and cause death.
