Ozone output falls away above roughly 80% relative humidity. Installation The AirOzone fits into the ventilation duct after your fan and carbon filter. Ozone needs contact time to react with the odour molecules in the air, so it must have a decent run of ducting to work in. Carbon Filter → Fast Clamp → Extractor Fan → Fast Clamp → AirOzone → at least 5m of ducting → outside Mount the AirOzone in the duct run downstream of the extractor fan, using Fast Clamps at each connection. Fit a minimum of 5 metres of ducting after the unit. This gives the ozone the reaction time it needs before the air leaves the system. Terminate that ducting outside. Never into a loft, garage, cupboard, adjoining room or any other enclosed space. Only run the generator while the extraction fan is running. Safety: the ozone and air must be ducted outside Exhaust from an AirOzone must never discharge into an enclosed area. The unit deliberately produces more ozone than is strictly needed to destroy the odours present, so there is surplus ozone in the outgoing air. That surplus breaks back down into ordinary oxygen over time, but ozone is harmful to breathe at high concentrations. Vent outside, keep people and animals out of the exhaust path, and only generate ozone when your fans are running. What is ozone? The oxygen we breathe is O2 — two bonded oxygen atoms. Ozone is O3: the same molecule with a third atom loosely attached. Oxygen prefers to sit in bonded pairs, so that third atom is unstable and makes ozone a powerful oxidising agent. When it meets an organic molecule the spare atom breaks away and oxidises it. That reaction kills bacteria, tackles mould spores and destroys odour compounds outright rather than trapping them. The only byproduct is ordinary oxygen. The AirOzone generates ozone using corona discharge plates, which ionise the air passing over them. The generators are built to EU safety standards. Maintenance and replacement elements The corona discharge plates are a consumable part. Output tapers off with use, and when it does the plates can be swapped rather than replacing the whole generator. Global Air Supplies do not publish a fixed interval — the guidance is to replace once the plates are no longer running at full potential. Heavy use (running most of the day through a full grow): plan to inspect and likely replace within roughly 6–12 months. Light or intermittent use: elements commonly last a few years. Sustained high humidity both reduces ozone output and shortens plate life. Inspect and clean the plates every 3–6 months. Dust and residue reduce output well before genuine wear does. In the duct run after the carbon filter and extractor fan, with at least 5 metres of ducting after it before the air exits outside. The order is: carbon filter, fan, AirOzone, 5m of ducting, outside. Why does it need 5 metres of ducting after it? Ozone destroys odour by reacting with it, and that reaction takes time. The 5 metre run gives the ozone enough contact time with the air to break the odour molecules down before the air leaves the system. Can I vent the output into a loft, garage or another room? No. The exhaust must go outside. The unit produces surplus ozone beyond what is needed to clear the odours, and ozone is harmful to breathe at high concentrations. It must never discharge into an enclosed space. Do I still need a carbon filter if I have an ozone generator? Yes. The AirOzone is designed to work alongside a carbon filter as part of the extraction system, not to replace it. The filter does the bulk of the work; the ozone deals with what gets through. Which size do I need? Match the AirOzone to your duct diameter and check your fan's airflow against the table above. The 6" handles up to 600 m³/h, 8" up to 1,200 m³/h, 10" up to 1,800 m³/h, 12" up to 3,000 m³/h and 14" up to 4,800 m³/h. If your fan moves more air than the unit is rated for, size up. Does high humidity affect performance? The corona discharge plates produce ozone at humidity levels up to around 80% RH. Above that, output drops off. Sustained high humidity also shortens the working life of the plates. How often do the ozone plates need replacing? There is no fixed manufacturer interval. Under heavy daily use, expect to inspect and likely replace within roughly 6–12 months; under light use they commonly last a few years. The practical signal is odour returning to your exhaust and the sharp ozone smell fading. Inspect and clean the plates every 3–6 months, and replace the element when cleaning no longer restores output. Should I leave it running all the time? Only run the generator while your extraction fans are running. Producing ozone into a static duct with no airflow serves no purpose and allows concentrations to build up.
