Eau de Parfum Ajedrez, the Spanish word for chess is another perfect perfume from Frassaï, the unusual inspiration providing an intricate and contemplative composition that quietly yet profoundly takes the senses on a unique olfactive journey from first moves to a deliciously faded checkmate. Ajedrez continues perfumer Ralf Schwieger’s love affair with orris, the shimmering, powdered, grey / pink mood material extracted from certain iris bulbs, the roots harvested and stored to maximise the concentration amount of irone in the rhizome, the chemical that gives orris is distinctive, obsessive nature. Ralf created Lipstick Rose for Frédéric Malle, Iris Nazarena for Aedes, and Vanille Insensée for Atelier Cologne, all perfumes that require his beloved iris to be the mysterious masterpieces they are. The orris extract in Ajedrez is quietly ignited by three key notes of cardamom, black pepper and lavender that combine to bring piquant illumination and bite to the inherent ephemerality of orris. Tobacco and ambered woods work softly around the orris vs lavender dynamic, lifting and smudging the notes with mossy hush.
