The Akan people of Ghana used small carvings, called goldweights, to weigh gold dust. These were made of lost-wax cast bronze, brass or copper (i.e., in a mold that was used only o nce, so each piece was unique). These goldweights reveal the tradition of the Akan people, its symbolically rich. They evoke proverbs, maxims and other historical stories. Also used as a vector of cultural transmission, the transition to adulthood was marked by the acquisition of goldweight: the father offered a small collection to his child.
