Akane offers bright red fruit with smooth skin and firm white flesh. It is of medium size, though they will be larger where the fruit is thinned. We love this apple because it frui ts reliably every year (many apples tend to produce every other year). We usually are picking our Akane apples at the end of August and for such an early apple it has a wonderful flavour profile being both sweet and tart. Akane makes a great all purpose apple and can be used for cooking, fresh eating and saucing or juicing. Like most early apples, it does not store for long. Easy to grow, and an excellent choice for espalier and cordons since it forms spurs easily. Show more
