Christian Hook won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 — the resulting commission, a portrait of Alan Cumming, now hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland alongside wo rk by Botticelli and Rembrandt. Born in Gibraltar and trained at Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art, Hook is preoccupied with time and motion: the way a face or a figure exists across several instants simultaneously, each layer of transparent paint a different moment in a single image.Akashik XI is among the most recent works in Hook's Akashik series, and shows the technique at its most refined: layers of transparent paint building a figure that exists simultaneously in multiple moments, the past and present visible through each other.
