ʻAlalā have been extinct in the wild since 2002, when the last pair of wild birds were spotted in South Kona district of Hawaiʻi Island. Luckily, conservationists began an ʻalalā b reeding program in the 1970s. Today, there are over 110 individuals in the breeding program. Plans to release ʻalalā back into the wild are underway.
