Alcea rosea subsp. ficifolia, commonly known as the fig-leaved hollyhock, is a distinctive subspecies of hollyhock appreciated for its unique foliage and elegant flowers. Unlike the typical hollyhock, this variety showcases deeply lobed, fig-like leaves that add an extra layer of visual interest to the garden even before flowering. Its tall, erect stems bear large, showy white flowers, but do come in a wide range of colors, including shades of pink, red, and yellow. These blooms, resembling single or semi-double hollyhock flowers, attract pollinators and provide a delightful display in mid to late summer. Growing up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) in height, Alcea rosea subsp. ficifolia adds vertical interest to borders, cottage gardens, and mixed perennial beds. Zones 4-9 Germination To germinate Alcea rosea subsp. ficifolia seeds, begin by scarifying the hard seed coat to enhance water absorption and promote germination. This can be done by gently nicking the seed coat with a knife or rubbing it with sandpaper. After scarification, soak the seeds in room temperature water for about 12 to 24 hours to further soften the seed coat. Prepare a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a combination of peat moss and perlite, and fill a container with it. Plant the scarified seeds about 1/4 inch deep in the potting mix, spacing them apart to allow room for growth. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting or watering lightly whenever the surface begins to dry out.
