The design of this kayak is based on the modified traditional Alaskan baidarka style, known for its speed and seaworthiness. While the traditional "iqyax" or single baidarka shape was used, this kayak utilizes a strip-building construction method for added potential. This results in a "Aleut-like" or "Aleut-esque" design, without the traditional split bow and with a real transom rather than a complex traditional stern. The outcome is a low-volume, agile boat ideal for surfing and handling in crosswinds, though it may not be suitable for rough water conditions. Building and paddling this kayak requires significant experience and skill, making it not recommended as a first kayak project. However, the effort will be rewarded with a beautiful and responsive kayak.
