Ali Faraj's lovely smile hides a life full of perseverance in the face of adversity. Orphaned at just five years old, Faraj was raised by his uncle, who treated him like a son. Under his uncle's guidance, Faraj learned how to drive, a skill that would become the foundation of his livelihood. After finishing primary school, he became a bus driver, navigating the inter-town routes between Kakamega, Bungoma, and Mumias. Faraj found joy in the challenge of the open road, always discovering new shortcuts and developing techniques to handle the demands of driving. Faraj married his first cousin, and together they had four children. His driving career allowed him to support his family, providing a stable life for them. However, this stability was shattered when both his wife and uncle passed away. Grieving their loss, Faraj struggled but eventually resorted to remarrying in an effort to cope with the pain, he ended up fathering four more children. Yet, life had more challenges in store. While driving a contracted pickup, Faraj was involved in a severe road accident with a larger truck. The impact left his left leg severely injured, and the driver responsible fled the scene. Faraj spent six months in the hospital, undergoing treatment and struggling to recover from both his physical injuries and the emotional toll the accident took on him. Despite the hardships, Faraj returned to driving, but his health continued to decline, forcing him to retire from the job he had loved. Now, his only journey is to and from the mosque, where he finds solace and a sense of purpose.
