c.1850. Discovered in the Drawing Room at Stokesay Court (the magnificent late-Victorian mansion where "Atonement" was filmed), this is a classic late nineteenth century fabric design by Augustus Pugin, who famously designed the furnishings for the interior of Westminster Palace. It was originally a cut velvet and is now woven in cotton and silk: the deep figuring is bordered in gold on the luminous ground as if it has been embroidered. Floral with swirling flourishes, Allcroft is wonderful for upholstery.
