The American alligator (A. mississippiensis) is native to the southeastern United States, they are apex predators that have few natural predators within their habitats ranging from Texas to North Carolina. They are the largest reptile species in North America and can grow up to 14 feet long and weigh over 1,000 pounds, with an estimated population of 5 million they can live to be 30-50 years old. American alligators are opportunistic carnivores and feed on a variety of prey, including fish, turtles, snakes, and mammals like deer and wild boar. Alligator’s jaw muscles able to exert a crushing pressure of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch and can swim at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour. Like other apex predators they play an important role in their ecosystem by controlling populations of prey species and creating habitat for other wildlife through their burrowing activities.
