The alliums bring a kind of structural magic to the late spring garden that few other flowers can replicate. Forelock raises its perfectly spherical deep purple red head above the border in May and June, a small architectural marvel that also happens to be loved by every bee in the neighbourhood. As a cut flower it is exceptional, long stemmed and dramatic in a vase, particularly at the stage where the globe is fully formed but still tightly closed. Leave it in the border and the bees will thank you; cut it for the house and everyone else will.
