Alma figs have a sweet, rich, caramel flavor. Alma trees tend to start producing fruits right away, even as young trees. The variety is late season ripening and suitable for Gulf Coast climates. Alma is a variety that was developed by a fig breeding program at Texas A&M University (TAMU). Professors and students worked to create figs that could grow well in the Gulf Coast climate and ultimately be commercially farmed. In 1974 TAMU released Alma, a cross between a female "Allison" fig and male "Hamma" caprifig. This variety is known to be able to withstand high temp and resist splitting in humidity. However, it is very frost sensitive and recommended for container culture when grown in a cold winter climate. Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December): We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March. **All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees. Rooted Cuttings(Spring): We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span.
