Titled ‘Aloha from Hell’ it followed Shine from his local La Jolla surf breaks to Vietnam via US Navy boot camp. Shine was a member of the China Beach Surf Club, an unofficial U.S. Military association founded in 1967 in Da Nang, Vietnam. It grew into a major cultural and therapeutic outlet for young G.I.s to surf during R&R away from the front lines of the war. What started initially as a small lifeguard outpost, grew into a major surf club with soldiers, including Shine, covertly shipping their surfboards in the States over to Vietnam.
