"Alone at Lunch" explores the experience of being surrounded by people while still feeling disconnected. Growing up, I was friendly with many different groups but never felt fully rooted in any one of them. Each school year, classmates would ask whether we shared the same lunch period because they were relieved to know there would be at least one familiar face. Yet more often than not, those students eventually found their place with closer friends, while I found myself noticing the students who were still sitting alone. I began spending my lunches with those students, introducing people to one another and helping create new circles of connection. Over time, those groups no longer needed me, and I would move on to help someone else. In many ways, I became a bridge between communities while never fully belonging to one myself. The painting depicts loosely connected watercolor figures outlined by a continuous black line, symbolizing the invisible threads that connect people to one another. At the center sits a solitary figure rendered only in black outline. Color surrounds her but never reaches her, reflecting the emotional reality of loneliness: being physically present yet feeling unseen. This work is both personal and universal.
