Just as a symphony can be broken down into many overlapping pure tones, so too can a landscape. To demonstrate this, a single function was created which was composed of many indepe ndent overlapping frequencies. High frequencies were then dampened as the function was both shifted downward and overlaid onto itself, creating an apparent transition from sharp crags to rolling foothills. A color palette was selected to resemble the phenomenon of alpenglow, which occurs when scattered light in the atmosphere illuminates the peaks of mountains, even when the sun is below the horizon.
