Teaching Ideas Alphabet tracing & letter exploration Ask students to trace the shape of a letter with their finger on the border, name its sound, or think of a word that starts with it. Call out a letter and have students race to find it in upper case, then lower case. A no-prep phonics warm-up that gets kids moving and engaged. Storytelling & creative writing Use the open center as a gathering space for collaborative storytelling. Point to a letter on the border and ask students to start a story with a word beginning with that letter. Pass the story around the circle, with each student continuing from the next letter. Reading and writing skills built naturally into circle time. Upper & lower case matching Call out a capital letter and ask students to find its lower case partner on the border. Use alphabet cards, magnetic letters, or small objects placed on matching letters for hands-on matching activities. A simple, visual way to reinforce letter recognition for early learners.
