Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’Alpinia zerumbet ‘Variegata’ produces broad lance-shaped leaves striped irregularly with cream, pale yellow and several shades of green. The smooth blades have fine parallel veins and arch from upright cane-like shoots, with no two carrying exactly the same balance of colour.New shoots rise tightly rolled from the underground rhizome and open into bright, relatively narrow leaves. The foliage becomes broader and more strongly arched as each shoot reaches full height, commonly 1.5–2 m indoors. Older clumps contain many shoots at different stages and may produce hanging clusters of waxy white flowers with pink and yellow interiors. The striped foliage supplies most of the colour long before the shell-like flowers appear.
