π Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda The highlands of Rwanda are wet in a way that gets into everything. The group had settled into the undergrowth when the rain came, and they stayed, because mountain gorillas do not rearrange their days around weather. The baby's fur has gone tight and curly with the damp, a halo of it around a face that has been in the world for approximately three months. It is holding a small branch with leaves. Nibbling at it, the way it has watched the adults do, the way it will do for the rest of its life. Three months old and already practicing on mom's back. I chose black and white because color here would have been noise. What this image is about lives entirely in the texture of wet fur and the two eyes looking out from inside it, wide open, taking everything in. All of it, apparently, for the first time.
