Amaretti biscuits are traditional Italian almond flavoured macaron biscuits. The word amaretti means 'little bitter things', and the cookies do have a slightly bitter almond taste. Amaretti biscuits were first created in the early 1700's in Venice, as an emergency wedding treat for a baker, who only had eggs, apricot kernels and sugar in the building at the time the priest arrived. Today amaretti biscuits are still made in the traditional way, with sugar, apricot kernels and egg whites. This large packet of amaretti biscuits is ideal for after dinner treats, or to crush and use in baking - perhaps to make a crumble, or crunchy topping for ice cream. The back of the packet includes a recipe for chestnut cream cups - like a creamy chestnut custard with crunchy crushed amaretti biscuits sprinkled over the top.
