Amarillo® Hops for Bright Citrus, Stone Fruit, and Classic American Aroma Amarillo® is a U.S. grown hop, offered here in standard T-90 pellet form and one of the most recognizable citrus-forward varieties in modern American brewing. Commercialized by Virgil Gamache Farms around 2000, Amarillo® is widely known for having been discovered as a chance plant and later developed into a signature proprietary hop with broad appeal across hop-forward beer styles. That origin story helps explain why Amarillo® has remained so popular for so long. It delivers the kind of bright, expressive citrus character that made it a staple in American craft brewing, but it also brings enough depth and softness to stay useful beyond a one-dimensional grapefruit bomb. In the right beer, Amarillo® can feel familiar, expressive, and highly drinkable all at once. Flavor and Brewing Character Amarillo® is known for grapefruit, orange, and lemon character, backed by stone fruit and floral notes. It tends to show a bright, inviting citrus profile while still carrying enough layered fruit character to keep the aroma from feeling sharp or simplistic. In the brewhouse, Amarillo® is well suited to late additions, whirlpool use, and dry hopping, though it can also contribute clean bitterness when used earlier in the boil. It fits naturally in IPAs, pale ales, wheat beers, and Belgian-style ales, especially when a brewer wants citrus-forward hop expression with a slightly softer fruit edge. Why Brewers Choose Amarillo® Brewers continue to reach for Amarillo® because it is one of the most dependable hops for building bright American citrus character without losing versatility. It works well on its own, blends easily with many other U.S. varieties, and remains a strong choice when you want a hop that feels expressive, proven, and highly usable across multiple recipe directions.
