Full-size runes measure approx .75-1". (18-22mm) As these are natural tumbled and polished stones, slight variations in dimensions may occur. These are not flat runes and have naturally formed stone shapes. Also available is a travel size set which are small stones about the size of a dime or less (see photos). The Elder Futhark or Germanic Futhark is the oldest form of the runic alphabet. It was a writing system used by Germanic tribes for Northwest Germanic dialects in the Migration Period, the dates of which are debated among scholars. Runic inscriptions are found on artifacts, including jewelry, amulets, tools, weapons, and, of course, runestones, from the 2nd to the 8th centuries. The Elder Futhark (named after the initial phoneme of the first six rune names: F, U, Þ, A, R, and K) has 24 runes, often arranged in three groups of eight runes.
