Ambretone® is more famously known as Velvione® by Givaudan but what most perfumers don't know is that Ambretone came first and is the superior quality of Velvione®. While Velvione® is pure Cyclohexadecen-5-one, Velvione also contains some Cyclohexadecen-6-one which, in my opinion, reduces its power and beauty. Ambretone® is a macrocyclic musk that behaves similarly to dextro-Muscenone (the captive pure form of Muscenone) and finds applications in very much the same areas. Ambretone®, however, is less animalic and has nuances of ambrette seed. A particular radiance occurs when blending Ambretone with genuine Hedione®. Ambretone® makes up fully 8.5% of Carnal Flower by Frederic Malle. Ambretone® is also closely related to the cheaper Globanone (Cyclohexadec-8-en-1-one), which is slightly less animal and, in my opinion, less elegant. This product is often solid at room temperature and requires a slight amount of warming to liquify.
