American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) is a highly regarded medicinal plant containing bioactive constituents known as ginsenosides. Closely related to Korean Ginseng (Panax ginseng), American Ginseng has a history of remarkably similar medicinal and folkloric applications developed independently by various North American Indian tribes. These similarities were recognised by the Chinese, and for many years American Ginseng has been highly sought after in China as a substitute for Korean Ginseng. An important parameter for differentiating American Ginseng from Korean Ginseng is the unique presence of 24-R-pseudoginsenoside F11 in American Ginseng. American Ginseng is a profound tonic adaptogen that is considered less yang than Korean Ginseng and therefore not as strongly stimulating. Subsequently, American Ginseng is particularly indicated in patients that are “tired and wired”, and who need cognition and mood enhancement. American Ginseng is also a potent immunomodulator, benefiting the immune system in a number of disease states.
