Platanus occidentalis Central Iowa American sycamore is a giant, native shade tree with year-round interest. Exfoliating bark makes this tree easy to identify, even in winter; seed-ball adorn the tree in late winter through early spring and easily degrade into the turf or native floor; magnificent maple-like leaves provide a thick canopy of shade all summer. seeds feed a variety of wildlife, and trees are water tolerant.
