Amethyst Cylinder/Cores - Click on drop down box to make your selection Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It forms when quartz crystallises from silica-rich fluids, most commonly in hydrothermal veins and in cavities within volcanic rocks such as basalt. Like all quartz, amethyst has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. The purple colour is caused by trace amounts of iron within the quartz crystal structure, modified by natural irradiation from surrounding rocks. Most of our Amethyst is sourced directly from Brazil.
