The main Canadian source of amethyst is near Thunder Bay, Ontario where mining has taken place intermittently over the last one hundred years. Scientists believe the amethyst find near Thunder Bay to be over one billion years old. Amethyst is found worldwide and has the distinction of being the birthstone for February and the official gemstone of the province of Ontario. Druse is a term that refers to any rock formation where an irregular cavity allows well-formed tiny crystal structures such as quartz, feldspar or other mineral crystals to grow. These cavities give tiny crystals a place to form over millions of years. The end result is a triumph of Mother Nature called drusy or druzy. Druse or drusy (druzy) can be found world wide, but they are more commonly associated with agates and various types of quartzes.
