It's colour derives from trace elements of Iron and Aluminium and it is found all over the world, though some of the richest deposits are in South America. History The name comes from the Greek word amethystos from ἀ- a-, "not" and methysko,"intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. Egyptian records credit it with having powers to protect against poison and toxicity and it was worn as a Talisman by soldiers to instill a sense of calm during times of danger.
