The Amish Pie Squash is an heirloom variety first introduced to Seed Savers Exchange in 1982 by James Robinson, who is said to have acquired it from Amish gardeners living in the m ountainous region of western Maryland. Vigorous plants produce heavy yields of large, heart-shaped squash with dense, orange flesh that can reach up to 5 inches thick on the largest pumpkins. Squash reportedly reach 60 to 80 pounds but more typically average 15 to 25 pounds in our hands. The firm, moist meat is finely grained and sweet, perfect for making pies, sweet beads, and pumpkin bars. Also suitable for soups, risotto, and roasting.
