Heteromorph ammonites are a type of ammonite that had a shell shape that deviated from the typical coiled shape. Instead, their shells were straight or had a loosely coiled, irregu lar shape. It had spikes developed to protect itself from fish that started developing armored bony mouths. Heteromorph ammonites lived during the Mesozoic era, from around 252 to 66 million years ago.
