Andersen No-Sway weight distribution hitch for New Zealand caravans The Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch combines weight distribution and built-in sway control in a lighter chain-and-spring system. It transfers part of the caravan's tow-ball load towards the tow vehicle's front axle and uses a tapered friction cone to reduce sway, while the urethane springs help dampen bounce. This Select Caravans configuration uses a 2-inch receiver shank, an adjustable rack with up to 6 inches of drop or rise, and universal brackets for 3-inch, 4-inch, 5-inch or 6-inch A-frames. Choose the ball size that matches the marking and dimensions of your caravan coupling. Important: The rating of the complete towing setup is always limited by its lowest-rated component, including the tow vehicle, receiver, ball, coupling, caravan chassis and hitch parts. Check your vehicle and caravan manufacturers' requirements before ordering. Fitment checks before you buy Confirm the tow vehicle has a 2-inch receiver. Read the ball size stamped on the caravan coupling. Measure it if the marking is unclear. Measure the height difference between the receiver and the level caravan coupling to confirm the 6-inch drop/rise rack suits your setup. Confirm the caravan A-frame is 3, 4, 5 or 6 inches deep and has clear space for the brackets and chains. Allow at least approximately 160 kg tongue weight for the friction-cone sway control to work effectively. Do not use the Andersen Weight Distribution Hitch with a surge-brake system. Check for gas lines, brake lines, wiring, tanks, battery boxes and other obstructions around the proposed bracket positions. How the Andersen system works The tapered ball housing contains friction material that responds to tongue load. As the caravan tries to sway, friction between the tapered ball and housing resists that movement. The tension chains transfer load forwards without the heavy spring bars used by many traditional weight distribution systems, while the urethane springs dampen vertical movement. The system is designed to reduce sway and bounce. It cannot compensate for poor loading, excessive speed, incorrect tyre pressures, worn suspension or towing beyond any manufacturer rating. Andersen specifies 150 ft-lb for the ball-housing adjustment bolts and 75 to 90 ft-lb for the frame-bracket bolts, without compressing the trailer frame. Follow the current Andersen manual for the complete sequence and recheck the setup whenever the load changes. Do not grease the tapered ball or coupling. The ball and coupling are designed to move together, and grease reaching the friction cone can reduce sway-control performance. Regularly check all fasteners, chains, springs and the friction cone for correct adjustment and wear. View the Andersen installation guide Product videos Common questions Can I use a 2-inch ball with a 50 mm coupling? Only if the coupling manufacturer confirms it. A 2-inch ball is 50.8 mm, so it is not automatically interchangeable with a true 50 mm ball. Select the 50 mm option when your coupling requires that exact size. Does this hitch eliminate all caravan sway? No towing product can guarantee that. The Andersen system is designed to reduce sway and bounce when it is correctly selected, installed and adjusted, and when the caravan and tow vehicle are properly loaded and maintained. Will it fit every caravan A-frame? No. This product includes universal brackets for 3-inch, 4-inch, 5-inch and 6-inch frames. Raised, extended, 4-3/8-inch and 7-inch or 8-inch frames require different brackets or a separate fitment review. Can it be used with surge brakes?
