ABOUT AN ARTIST Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) is one of the most famous Lithuanian artists, who left an indelible mark on Lithuanian culture and the history of modern European art. A painter, composer and writer, he was a universal creator whose life spanned only 35 years, but his legacy was enormous. M.K. Čiurlionis created at the crossroads of symbolism and modernism. He is considered one of the pioneers of early abstract art in the world. He was the first Lithuanian artist to combine music and painting into a single artistic language and his works are often described as “painted music.” His work embodies the spirit of Lithuania, a deep-rooted connection with the country’s culture and the mystical beauty of nature.
