Unearth the distinctive flavour profile of our premium Ground Aniseed, an essential botanical for the discerning distiller seeking to craft spirits with unparalleled character. Sourced directly from the sun-drenched fields of Turkey, this aniseed is meticulously ground to ensure maximum potency and ease of use in your next distillation. This small, airy herb, native to the Mediterranean and southwest Asia, looks very similar to its close relatives fennel, parsley, and Queen Anne's lace. The tiny fruits it produces, commony called aniseed, contain high levels of anethole and are widely used in liqueurs, vermouths, and the yellow Italian aperitif Galliano. A Botanical with Ancient Roots Pimpinella anisum, commonly known as aniseed, boasts a rich and storied history dating back millennia. Originating from the Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia, its aromatic seeds were revered by ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It was an essential spice along the Silk Road, traded for its unique sweet and aromatic properties, eventually finding its way into the heart of many cultures' culinary and beverage traditions. From Culinary Delight to Distilled Masterpiece While aniseed is widely celebrated in baking, confectionery, and liqueurs, its true magic shines in the world of distillation. The intensely aromatic compound anethole, responsible for aniseed's characteristic liquorice-like flavour, is highly soluble in alcohol, making it a perfect botanical for infusing spirits. Distillers harness this power to create a diverse range of beverages. Crafting Anise-Infused Spirits Aniseed is your key to crafting iconic anise-forward spirits. Aniseed is a cornerstone botanical in the production of: Absinthe: The legendary "Green Fairy" owes its distinctive flavour and characteristic louche (cloudiness when diluted with water) to a high concentration of aniseed. Ouzo: Greece's national drink, a clear spirit that turns milky white when water is added, is heavily flavoured with aniseed. Arak: A traditional Middle Eastern spirit, also known for its strong anise flavour and clouding effect. Pastis: The popular French aperitif, often enjoyed with water, is another prime example of aniseed's dominance. Our Aniseed offers distillers the convenience of a finely milled product, ensuring optimal extraction of its volatile oils and a consistent, robust flavour in every batch.
