Ann Thompson 1803 Oval cross stitched samplers are very unusual and this is an outstanding example. While the oval is not symmetrical as it is done in cross stitch in a rather childishly random way, the design is nonetheless stunning. Sprays of roses adorn the outer border. At the top center the crucified Christ is centered in the verse:Behold the Saviour of MankindNailed to the Shameful TreeHow vast the love that him inclindbrTo bleed and die for me Surrounded by counted satin stitched floral cartouches the verse continues below:Be thou faithfull unto death and I willgive the (sic) a crown of life Adam and Eve stand alongside the Tree of Life entwined by a menacing black serpent, yet flanked by comical little black dogs wearing collars, and stags seemingly impaled on leafy trees. The final verse is:For As By One Mans Disobedience ManyWere made Sinners so by the obedienceOne shall Many Be made Righteous Ann Thompson was nine years old when she completed this sampler in 1803.
