Anna Russian is an heirloom oxheart tomato brought to the United States by Russian immigrants and eventually introduced to gardeners by Craig LeHoullier, who offered it in the 1989 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. Anna Russian produces early, heavy yields of pink, heart-shaped tomatoes marked by a delicious, sweet flavor and a level of juiciness uncommon for early maturing tomatoes. The tomatoes typically weigh 10 to 12 ounces each, though fruit weighing up to a pound are not unheard-of. Anna Russian is a great dual-purpose variety, with a flavor that begs of a sandwich and a dense, meaty texture that makes quick work of canning. The plants yield heavily, especially for an early variety, bearing tomatoes in clusters of two to three, which makes picking a breeze. Because of their wispy, somewhat droopy foliage, plants are sometimes mistaken as being diseased, but gardeners needn't worry— this is a common characteristic of oxheart shaped varieties.
