It is the jubilee year of 1300, and many hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make the arduous journey to Rome, among them, Sandro and Antonio, merchants from Genoa. They are pursued by the villainy scholar, Giacomo, who suspects, correctly, that they are carrying much gold. Giacomo confronts the two merchants deep in the forest of Tuscany.
