Light in Byzantine Mosaic A mosaic is formed from numerous small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other material called tesserae. In Byzantine churches, gold and glass tesserae were placed at slightly varied angles so that they received and reflected light differently as the viewer moved. The image therefore does not remain visually static. Light travels across its surface, causing the figures and golden background to appear luminous. This quality made mosaic especially suited to sacred art. The golden field does not reproduce an ordinary landscape or interior.
