Anthony Hopkins, Los Feliz CA, 1991. Anthony was British, with a serious, dignified reputation—exactly what you’d expect from a seasoned professional. So, I walked in expecting a quiet, introspective session, focused on capturing that poised determined actor. Actually, I kind of expected Hannibal Lecter, which scared the shit out of me.But when I met him, he completely surprised me. He was hysterically funny, doing impressions and cracking jokes—Brando Jack Nicholson, Rod Steiger-nothing like the serious, buttoned-up persona I had imagined. The whole day was filled with laughter, but despite the humor behind the scenes, I ended up creating portraits that felt more like that classic old Hollywood style. There was a balance I wanted to strike. I could’ve shot something more playful, but instead I captured the essence of what I saw in him—this dignified, almost timeless presence. It’s a testament to the fact that the real person often lies somewhere between expectation and reality, and it’s the photographer’s job to find that truth.
